Below are descriptions of some of Hands On Charlotte's ongoing volunteer projects. Individuals must attend an orientation before signing up for any of these projects. We are always looking to add to this list. The more volunteers we have who are interested in leading projects, the more we can offer.
Monthly Project Descriptions for Individual Volunteers
CHILDREN AND YOUTH
PLAY WITH ME - Help homeless families achieve long-term resolution of their problems by leading activities with their children while their parents attend meetings and classes.
TERRIFIC TUESDAYS - Spend time with children whose families are dealing with substance abuse, helping lead structured, educational activities while their parents are in 12 step meetings.
CRADLES TO CRAYONS - volunteers spend time with children (infants through 9 years old) while their mothers attend workshops. This project occurs at an alternative program for incarecerated women.

DISABILITY AWARENESS
BE A BUDDY - Visit a group home for adults with developmental disabilities and and help the residents feel accepted by interacting in fun activities like cooking, making crafts or playing games.
GREENACRES - Volunteers can help make trails, clear land and maintain buildings at a fully accessible working farm that provides therapy for children and adults with disabilities.
SPECIAL ROLLERS - Bowl with athletes with developmental disabilities, cheering on these enthusiastic athletes and helping them raise their self-esteem.
SPECIAL OLYMPICS BOWLING - Cheer on a great group of athletes with developmental disabilities. It's a lot of fun and only takes place Sunday afternoons February through July.

EDUCATION
STUDY BUDDIES- Weekly tutoring projects in conjunction with the Police Athletic League help serve elementary and middle school students in low-resource neighborhoods.
HOMEWORK HOUNDS - Volunteers to help elementary and middle school students with their homework at the West Boulevard branch of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Library.

ENVIRONMENT
RIBBONWALK - volunteers help maintain trails and remove invasive plants at a protected urban forest.
FOR THE BIRDS - volunteers assist Carolina Raptor Center by maintaining walking trails, gardens and bird environments.
FRIENDS IN FREEDOM - each month volunteers help maintain and beautify the grounds at Freedom Park.
HOSPITALS
SPRUCE UP - Assist with grounds maintenance and general upkeep by painting, weeding, trimming and planting around a facility that provides a "home away from home" for out-of-town family members of patients in local hospitals.
HOMELESSNESS, HUNGER, AND CRISIS
RACE AGAINST HUNGER - Volunteers sort, label, and repackage donated food at a local food bank that collects and processes donations from grocery stores and government agencies, redistributing them to organizations who feed the hungry.
SATURDAY MORNING LIVE - Volunteers help support the efforts of an agency that provides essential services to individuals and families experiencing financial crisis. Activities include sorting through donations of clothing and household items, separating the usable from the unusable.

ADULT LITERACY
GED/A.B.L.E. - If you can read, you can help! Volunteers help tutor adults in reading, math, English, science, or history. You can help them pass an exam and earn a Graduate Equivalency Diploma, although most students are trying to achieve basic reading skills.

SENIORS
TIME WITH SENIORS - Come and join the fun by playing bingo with these happy group of senior citizens at a local apartment complex in Uptown Charlotte.
BINGO & MORE - Volunteers coordinate the BINGO games and other activities for residents of a nursing home, keeping score and handing out prizes.
GAME NIGHT AT BEVERLY - volunteers participate in activities such as board or card games, ring toss of balloon volleyball.
FAIRMARKET FRIENDS - join the residents of an active senior community for bingo or movies or a cookout.

ANIMALS
PET THERAPY- Bring your dog or cat to visit with the seniors at a nursing home in East Charlotte. Visiting with animals can help people feel less lonely and makes it easier for volunteers and residents to talk.

SPECIAL PROJECTS
CENTER CITY AMBASSADORS - ambassadors are friendly, outgoing volunteers who take to the streets during concerts, basketball games, conventions or other events to serve as an information resource for visitors to Center City.
